New data have been collected in the framework of a EU-United Nations Development Program EMBLAS (Environmental Monitoring in the Black Sea, http://emblasproject.org/). BENTHOX scientists (Lei Chou and Audrey Plante) joined the EMBLAS expedition that took place in Ukrainian waters between May 16th-22nd, 2016. The aim was to collect new data in order to link punctually the dissolved O2 level, the benthos, the benthic-pelagic fluxes and diagenetic processes. Macrobenthos samples (Van veen Grabs), long (5m) and short (20 cm) sediment cores and bottom water are collected during the expedition. Then, macrobenthos species determination, microprofiling, geochemical analysis of bottom water, porewater, and solid phase, incubation experiments will be realized. The analysis of collected samples will allow the determination of the macrobenthos species and trait distribution, benthic-pelagic fluxes and sedimentary processes.
BENTHOX scientists will join another expedition in 2017.
